Nowadays there is a procedure that is being preformed that its great for people who would like to tone and firm their abs but don’t want to end up with a huge scar on their belly. San Diego, CA plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Miller is performing this type of procedure.
Plastic surgeon Scott Milller, M.D. has developed what he calls the “Tiny Tummy Tuck”, a minimally-invasive procedure that is done through the woman’s existing C-Section scar. This leaves her with a toned, tighter tummy and no bigger a scar than she had to begin with.
For those women who have not had C-Sections, Dr. Miller says that the resulting scar will be similar to that of a C-section, which is generally located low and in an existing skin fold to reduce its visibility. Recovery is faster than with a conventional tummy tuck, and the woman can wear a bikini without worrying about displaying a huge scar.

Jina Hunt still feels the same way as she felt in some old pictures of herself.
She says, “I never thought I was overweight. And it wasn’t until I walked down the hallway and it was like, ‘oh, I can’t breathe’.”
With her health on the line, Hunt decided to act.
Dr. Rouzbeh Kordestani says, “It’s a trend now, that people are trying to get healthier and get their bodies back in shape. They are going through and getting these gastric bypasses, especially those who are not successful in the gym.”
Just to take a few steps up to her driveway began to be pretty difficult for Jina and her emotions was going as good as her health.
She says, “I thought physically, that I was having a heart attack or that something was wrong with me. And it was because I was 595 pounds.”
Hunt dropped more than 300 pounds after surgery,.
“I’ve noticed a big difference in breathing, in how I move, being able to exercise. And that in itself is wild because I could never walk that far before.” She says.
But her hard work is just beginning. The procedure left an excess amount of skin that she will need to take care of that with more surgery. From there, she has a long road to recovery.
Dr. Kordestani says, “The usual patient that goes through gastric bypass usually takes about three to four weeks sometimes as late as 8 weeks. Jina again is an extreme example, so I figure that she is going to be at the higher end of recovery.”
Something that for Hunt, is everything.

Just to be “perfect”, women have plastic surgery and spend a lot of money just to be pretty. A face lift to rejuvenate your skin, tummy tuck and liposuction for that extra skin/fat and off course a breast augmentation to be more attractive.
To get the perfect smile for you, you may have to empty your bank account. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
A survey by Koncept Analytics, a US-based research organisation, found that the Indian cosmetic surgery industry has registered a compound annual growth rate of 34 per cent in 2005-07 and is worth approximately Rs 460 crore, not accounting for hospital fees, anaesthesia and postsurgical care.
Throw in an eye lift, sculpting for the flabby upper arm and liposuction to suck out the fat from your thighs and it could set you back by the amount equivalent to making a down payment for your dream house.
Looking good is certainly big business. But somewhere amidst this never-ending pursuit of beauty, the effect on a patient’s self esteem and its resulting health implications are not examined.
Here are the details on what the beauty mart has on sale and what to watch out for.
TUMMY TUCK
It’s like carrying a kangaroo pouch wherever you go, one a body-hugging T-shirt or bulky cardigan doesn’t hide. The abdominoplasty treatment, sometimes coupled with liposuction, irons out those crinkles. It removes excess wrinkled skin, stretch marks, scars and fatty tissues from the mid-lower region.
It will set you back by
With hospital stay and procedures, anything between Rs 1,20,000 and Rs 1,50,000.
What it involves
“The abdominal skin and muscles are separated using an incision in the lowest fold, while the navel is left attached. The muscle is tightened, while excess skin and fat are cut off through the incision,” says Anil N. Tibrewala, plastic surgeon with P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai.
Post-surgery
Three to four follow-up visits, while stitches are removed within 10 to 12 days. A corset is recommended for 3 to 6 months.
ARM LIPOSUCTION
Muscles become squeegee bundles of loose fat around the upper arm. Long sleeves or diets don’t help. “It’s the medial or inner arm that needs work and liposuction via ultrasonic or power-assisted devices will do the trick,” says Lakshyajit Dhami, Vasudhan Arjin Cosmetic and Laser Surgery Centre, Mumbai.

Bariatric surgery has the same anti-diabetic effect in adolescents as it has in adults, researchers here said.
In 11 severely obese adolescents with type 2 diabetes, mean and median levels of glycated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, and serum insulin had declined dramatically a year after undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, reported Thomas H. Inge, M.D., Ph.D., of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and colleagues in the January issue of Pediatrics.
For example, from a baseline level of 7.33%, mean glycated hemoglobin fell to 5.58%, the researchers said.
Action Points <!—
–>
- Explain to interested patients that the study included only severely obese adolescents.
- Note that the long-term efficacy and safety of bariatric surgery were not studied and are not well known in this population.
- Explain that the study was a retrospective review of patient records, a relatively weak form of evidence, and did not include a directly comparable control group.
“Our observations provide evidence that bariatric surgery reverses or significantly improves type 2 diabetes mellitus in adolescents over a one-year period,” Dr. Inge and colleagues wrote.
They said theirs was the first study of the procedure’s potential for improving glycemic control in this population. Previous studies have documented such an effect in middle-aged adults. (See: Bariatric Surgery Erases Type 2 Diabetes in Obese Patients and ASMBS: Bariatric Surgery Found Superior to Drugs in Controlling Diabetes)
But the researchers also pointed out that the longer-term safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery in adolescents are still uncertain.
They called for longer and larger studies to confirm that bariatric surgery can safely maintain glycemic control in young patients.
The researchers reviewed records of patients 14 to 21 years old at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and four other centers that perform bariatric surgery on adolescents.
The patients’ mean body mass index before surgery was 50.4 (range 43 to 63), with a median weight of 142 kg (313 lbs).
A year after surgery, the mean BMI had declined to 33.1 (range 26 to 48) and the median weight fell to 97.8 kg, or 215.6 lbs (P<0.001 for both relative to baseline).
The surgery also showed benefits for a number of glycemic control measures:
- Median HbA1c: 6.35% at baseline, 5.2% after surgery (P=0.04)
- Mean fasting glucose: 143.8 mg/dL at baseline, 84.5 mg/dL after surgery (P=0.03)
- Median fasting glucose: 118.5 mg/dL at baseline, 86.5 mg/dL after surgery (P=0.03)
- Median serum insulin: 36 mIU/mL baseline, 8.1 μIU/mL after surgery (P=0.006)
The patients also showed mean declines of 29% to 61% in serum triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, and alanine and aspartate aminotransferase levels (P<0.05), the researchers found.
At one year, 10 of the patients no longer met criteria for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and were able to stop taking their hypoglycemic medications.
Fasting blood glucose values of less than 100 mg/dL were achieved in 88% of the sample, the researchers said.
The remaining patient had been severely diabetic before surgery, with baseline glycated hemoglobin of 10.5%, and was taking insulin as well as oral hypoglycemic drugs.
Following bariatric surgery, this patient showed some improvement in glycemic control with a glycated hemoglobin value of 7.6%. Oral medications were discontinued and the patient was managed on much lower insulin doses, the researchers said.
Despite the significant weight loss, however, the patients remained significantly overweight.
The median excess weight after one year was 20.1 kg (44.3 lbs). Still, that represented a big reduction from baseline when the median was 77.9 kg (171.7 lbs).
For comparison purposes, Dr. Inge and colleagues also compiled one-year outcomes for 67 other obese, diabetic adolescents who were managed medically, without bariatric surgery.
These patients, who were much less obese than those in the surgical group (mean baseline BMI of 35.4), showed almost no change in mean BMI or body weight following a year of treatment.
However, they did show significant improvement in glycemic control: mean glycated hemoglobin of 7.1% after one year, compared with 7.8% at baseline (P=0.005).
The researchers said the data on these medically managed patients were important by themselves, even though they weren’t directly comparable to the surgically treated patients.
“This ‘natural history’ data from a relatively large adolescent diabetic cohort is informative and is rarely found in the literature,” they wrote.
A limitation of the study was that data on glycemic control were not available for all the patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Most notably, only five patients had glycated hemoglobin measurements both at baseline and at the one-year evaluation. The study also enrolled only a small sample, and the control group was not directly comparable to the study group.

Study shows that obesity surgery can reverse diabetes in teens, just as it does in adults. All but one of the 11 extremely obese teens studied saw their diabetes disappear within a year after weight-loss surgery, the researchers reported. The 11th patient still had diabetes, but needed much less insulin and stopped taking diabetes pills.
Previous studies have shown the diabetes benefits of obesity surgery for adults. Dr. Thomas Inge, a pediatric surgeon at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and his colleagues wanted to find out if the same was true for adolescents.
Although more research is needed, Inge said the study “opens the door” to weight-loss surgery as a treatment option for severely obese teens with Type 2 diabetes.
The results are in the January issue of Pediatrics and are being released Monday.
About a third of U.S. youngsters are either overweight or obese. Increasing numbers of obese children are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease and the one linked to obesity. It was seldom seen before in kids.
“It’s marching south through the generations, which is very scary,” said Dr. Larry Deeb, a former president of the American Diabetes Association and a spokesman for the group.
Teen candidates for weight-loss surgery need to be carefully selected, he said, since the long-term consequences of the operation for children aren’t yet known.
The 11 patients in the study were 14 to 21 years old and all were extremely obese, ranging from 250 to 403 pounds. They were taking diabetes pills and one was on insulin. At five different medical centers, they had gastric bypass surgery, or stomach stapling, to reduce their stomach to a small pouch.
They were compared to 67 mostly obese teens with diabetes at Cincinnati Children’s whose blood sugar was being controlled through diet or medication.
After one year, those who had surgery had lost between 72 and 218 pounds, although none had dropped to a normal weight. For 10 of them, their diabetes was in remission and they stopped taking diabetes medicine.
For the teens that didn’t have surgery, they all still had diabetes after a year and there was no difference in their weight or their use of diabetes medication. Their blood sugar levels did improve, the researchers said.
As for the one surgery patient whose diabetes wasn’t reversed, the researchers said the reason wasn’t known, but they noted his mother and a younger sibling also had Type 2 diabetes. Three years after the surgery, the teen was no longer overweight but still needed to take insulin.

Although this eye procedure has existed for more than 10 years, up until now having glasses has been prohibit for the fighter pilots but now the Israeli Air force has, for the first time, graduated the first fighter pilot after having this procedure. Even if three years ago, the U.S. Navy began accepting laser surgery pilot trainees. That worked, and Israel has followed suit.
Over the last four years, all of the American military services have been offering free laser eye surgery. This was considered a good investment, as troops who didn’t have to wear glasses were much better off. Every soldier knows what hassle eyeglasses can be in combat, because they get a taste of it in basic training. The running and jumping, the dust, explosions and general chaos often send eyeglasses flying, or leave them damaged. Moreover, combat soldiers are now more likely to use eyepiece sights, and these are easier to use without glasses. Each of the services set up its own clinics on many bases, and allowed troops elsewhere to get the procedure from civilian eye doctors. The procedure itself only takes about ten minutes, and activity must be restricted for 30 days after, so the eye can heal. The laser procedure has gone through several generations and is quite fast, effective and safe. The problem rate for the troops is practically zero.
The procedure also expands the choices of potential pilots, as many promising pilots are turned away because their eyesight is not good enough. Many notable aces in the early years of air combat had eyesight problem that would have kept them out of flight school today. Modern warplanes are faster and less forgiving than in days past, so the near perfect eyesight has become a requirement.
Laser eye surgery (often called “lasik”) has also become a support item for combat pilots. The US Navy loses about eight pilots a year to failing eyesight. Laser eye surgery has proved capable of restoring that eyesight to standards required for carrier pilots.

In the last 20 years or so, plastic surgery has become more and more important to people who want a change in their appearance. However, people that want to have plastic surgery, are now choosing to go under the knife abroad to have different procedures. It is globally important to people to improve their looks.
Nowadays more people are looking for medical tourism outside the developed and upgraded facilities in the United State and other first world countries that now looks like a reasonable option. Despite the fact that quality of such medical procedures has not deteriorated in developed countries, many people now prefer to ‘be done’ elsewhere.
Medical tourism is providing more people chances to finally take the cosmetic surgery procedure they need and want. As for safety, most surgeons and professional staff in clinics abroad have also received medical education and training in Europe or in the US.
The dominating trend in the sector for global cosmetic surgery is governed by affordability. Prices abroad of common and special aesthetic surgical procedures, like liposuction, breast augmentation, facelift, tummy-tuck, rhinoplasty and laser hair removal, are drastically lesser compared to costs of having such procedures done in the US or in UK.

For some people it is really easy to admit they had a nose job. A lot of celebs have had that procedure to reduce the size of their nose or even change the shape of their current one and are not afraid to say it out loud. Nowadays, rhinoplasty procedures are very common thing especially in the United States. And while to some, rhinoplasty may seem superfluous, keep this in mind – if your eyes are the window to your soul and you feel that your nose outshines your eyes, what is your face saying?
For health reasons or just because of cosmetic reasons, nose jobs are one of the most popular procedures among men and women. So, the following will help you understand the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty and what they mean for you and for your nose.
Two Types of Rhinoplasty
Open and closed rhinoplasty, while almost the same in name, refer to two different types of nose jobs. Closed rhinoplasty is named by doctors as endonasal rhinoplasty and open is called external rhinoplasty. If both alter the shape of the nose, what differences are there between the two?
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty is the more popular of the two with patients for many reasons.
• The risk of external scarring is almost non-existent because incisions are made inside the nostrils
• While the surgeon has a more obstructed view, the procedure does not restrict surgical possibilities
• Reshaping is easier because bone and cartilage can be manipulated
• This surgery allows the surgeon to add implants to the nose to make it appear fuller
Open Rhinoplasty
Not as common as closed rhinoplasty because of the scares that are left that may be visible. However, surgeons prefer this surgery for a few important reasons.
• It is easier for the surgeon to work on the tip of the nose
• With open rhinoplasty, the skin on the nose is lifted and this makes it easier for the surgeon to see what s/he is doing.
• Correcting nasal passages is much easier
Logistically, the main difference between the two is a cut on the outside of the nose. The cut is, in retrospect, small and forms only a small scar that in most cases is barely, if at all, visible.
Both open and closed rhinoplasty requires sedation but some surgeons use a local anesthetic. The recovery times differ in some ways between the two surgeries but patients of both surgeries experience few if not all of the following post-op side effects.
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Bleeding
• Headaches
Recovery
To show your new nose to society, you may have to wait around 3 weeks for the bleeding and the bruises to go away. At the first day you will have to keep your head elevated and you will have to stay in bed at least 24 hours after the surgery. In the first days and weeks the swelling will increase and decrease and after that you will be ready for the before and after picture.
When it comes to the making the final call between open and closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon has the last word. He will decide whether you are a candidate for open or closed rhinoplasty. It all comes down to accessibility of the nose. But no matter which type of surgery you get, the result can be a newer and better nose.

People say that your eyes are the window to your soul. Also, is the first thing that you notice on someone’s face. With the years, the eyelids start to become saggy and the excess of skin can even drop so much that the skin can hang over your eyes and obstruct your vision and it can even get really hard to open your eyes. And if that is the case you can even look older that what you really are.
You may fix that problem and look younger as easy as removing some of the fat behind your eye muscle.
Eyelid control
• Ptosis is droopiness of the eyelid. This droopiness is not caused by excessive skin but instead from a weakened or detached tendon that raises the eyelid. Ptosis is corrected by shortening or reattaching the muscle that elevates the eyelid. This procedure can be done by itself or in addition to the blepharoplasty procedure, depending on your situation.
• Dermatochalasis or redundant eyelid skin is the result of excess skin that creates the appearance of puffiness. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is the treatment for dermatochalasis. It works by removing excess skin, muscle and fat from your eyelid.
• Fatty prolapse arises when tissue around the eye becomes relaxed, which enables normal fatty tissue to protrude forward. This change commonly occurs because of time and aging and can contribute to droopy eyelid.
Brow Ptosis
As you grow older you can develop a brow ptosis, that means that your eyebrows become droopy and you can always fix it by removing the tissue beneath the skin’s surface. It can be done in your forehead, hairline or scalp.
Ideal patients
Most patients that have this procedure done are men and women that have realistic expectations about the surgery. Most patients are 35 year old and older but if the baggy eyelids are hereditary, you can have this procedure done even earlier in life. Blepharoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-assurance.
Getting older
Removing the fat from your eyelids is permanent, and will effectively eliminate puffiness. However, as your skin continues to age, the wrinkling among your eyelid area may return. But despite the unavoidable aging process, patients are generally satisfied with their results for years following surgery. Other patients make a choice to undergo additional improvements to their eyelids later down the road.

Fear of pain and surgery can sometimes can hold you back from doing what you really like. Many women would like to have their breast bigger but wont because of the procedure involved.
Now, women can actually be walking around with almost no pain at all 24 hours after they had a breast augmentation thanks to a plastic surgeon of the Vein Center in Tampa Bay named Dr. Schaffer. He has the perfect rapid recovery time program so women can have less recovery time needed.
25 year old mom of 3, Monica Tran, was very happy to hear this great news. “My kids would not allow me to be down for any period of time” she said.
So Dr. Schaffer knew this procedure would be perfect for Monica. He says, “rapid recovery is a variation of standard breast augmentaiton technique. There are really three phases. There is the pre-operative phase where you get the patient to buy into the fact that they are not going to be hurting and they will be up and moving early on.”
Monica says she actually went to dinner the night she had the surgery. Dr. Schaffer says he also avoid the big bulky dressings. He says, “We limit the dressing and it really hasn’t altered the result in any way other than the recovery which is much more quicker.”
He says it is a gentler approach to the breast augmentation process. He says he is more delicate in the way he handles the tissue and muscle. He makes sure to have his patients, like Monica up and out of bed the night of surgery.
Monica was happy with the results. She says her biggest concern about having breast augmentation was the pain. And she says besides a little discomfort, it was nothing. Dr. Schaffer has been using this concept since 2006 but is now using it more on patients.
He claims that it is possible even if not many people belive that they can go walking around after only 24 hours.
