Why See a Neuromuscular Dentist?

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Most people expect a dentist to be adept at cleanings, filling cavities, repairing damaged teeth and generally making a person’s smile look straighter, healthier and more beautiful. But there is a small subset of dentists who take their skills to a whole new level and help people get relief from chronic discomforts and such as:

- Headaches
- Migraines
- Dizziness
- Pain in the shoulder, neck, face or jaw
- Jaws that click, lock or pop
- Ringing in the ears (Tinnitus)
- Tooth sensitivity
- Cracked or worn teeth
- Irritability
- Inability to fully open or close the mouth

Neuromuscular dentists are able to reposition a person’s bite to alleviate symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Most people are unaware of the intricate movements provided by the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). By connecting the skull with the lower jaw, these joints allow for side-to-side, front-to-back and up-and-down movements of the jaw, giving individuals the ability to effectively talk, chew and make facial expressions. Only when these joints become misaligned do many people realize the full extent of how jaw misalignment can lead to aggravating and even debilitating symptoms.

What causes TMD?

TMD does not happen overnight, and the symptoms can begin slowly and become more severe over time. Most people do not associate a headache or shoulder pain, for example, with a misaligned jaw, so the symptoms can be overlooked. TMD can occur for a variety of reasons, including:

- Injury or trauma, such as a blow to the jaw
- Teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching
- Poor dental work or orthodontic treatments
- Neglected teeth
- Bad bite (malocclusion)
- Diseases, such as forms of TMJ arthritis
- Stress
- Displaced disks
- Fatigue
- Overbite
- Dentures or partials

How do neuromuscular dentists diagnose TMD?

Neuromuscular dentists employ a whole host of computerized equipment to determine if a person’s symptoms are the result of a bad bite. Instruments are used to track the jaw’s full range of motion as well as the resting position. Electromyography measures the relaxed and stressed muscle positions of the jaw, while sonography detects abnormalities through sounds made by the jaw joints. The jaw muscles will also be relaxed using Transcutaneous Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation (TENS) to help the dentist identify the ideal positioning.

In the end, the neuromuscular dentist can pinpoint the patient’s optimal jaw positioning and create a temporary orthotic to wear over the teeth that will help correct the bite. Once the bite is aligned, the dentist and patient may decide that other dental work is necessary, such as crowns, veneers, implants or even tooth whitening to create a more perfect smile.

Smiling with confidence!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

In what is often considered a self-conscious society, looking and feeling good is an increasingly important aspect of life, for both young and old. Indeed, it is important to keep fit and healthy, whilst we all aspire to improve the way we look and feel in order to make good first and lasting impressions.

Of course, many factors influence how a person may look or feel; but a nice, healthy smile will be one of the primary features which are recognized in a person and can go a long way to making that good first impression.

It is not too uncommon for many people to be conscious of their smile. This can be for a number of reasons, but in most cases it is a minor imperfection which can usually be treated with an inexpensive and readily available option.

For some, teeth dis-figuration is the main barrier to having – and enjoying – a nice smile. This is usually resolved through orthodontist treatment and may involve wearing a brace for some or all of the day. Much of this treatment is carried out on the NHS and although it may prove uncomfortable for patients in the short term, being able to see a long term goal of smiling with confidence should be enough to encourage teeth dis-figuration to become a thing of the past.

Another popular – and nowadays inexpensive – way to improve your smile is through teeth whitening This should be arranged following consultation with your dentist but could involve home based techniques, as well as those which are carried out at the dental surgery. Home based techniques can include tray based whitening. This involves your dentist taking an impression of your teeth for you to insert into your mouth – much like a gum shield – which ensures the teeth whitening gel is applied to all of the correct areas in your mouth.

However, one of the most important methods to improving and maintaining a healthy smile is, of course, to brush your teeth on a regular basis. Therefore, consult your dentist for the most appropriate toothpaste for your needs, but you will probably find there are a number of quality teeth whitening toothpastes already available on the market. In addition, flossing regularly and using a good mouthwash is also recommended.

Whatever concerns you have regarding your teeth, it is important to keep in mind that a consultation with your dentist – as well as implementing a good brushing regime – can help put you on the road to achieving that smile you’ve always wanted.

Are You a Good Candidate for an Injectable Procedure?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

If you look in the mirror and wish you could make those wrinkles disappear, you’re in good company. According to a survey from the National Consumers League, nearly 90 million Americans admit to using products and procedures with the hope of reducing the signs of aging. Now, with the refinement of cosmetic dermal fillers, we have more choices than ever to make that wish a reality.

Dermal fillers, also called injectables and soft-tissue fillers, are gaining in popularity, second only to Botox as the top form of non-invasive cosmetic procedure. Why? Because dermal fillers offer quick, long-lasting results with little risk.

How Do They Work?

A dermal filler can help fill in and smooth out crow’s feet, some acne scars, and facial wrinkles like frown and laugh lines. They can also add fullness to lips or cheeks. A treatment generally takes less than 30 minutes, and results can last more than twelve months depending on which injectable filler you choose to have.

The fillers are gels made from synthetic or naturally-occurring substances and are injected into the second skin layer, the dermis.

Are Injectable Fillers Right for You?

As with any cosmetic procedure, not everyone is a prime candidate. So how do you know if dermal fillers are right for you? Use these questions as a guide:

• Do you have a healthy self-image?
Studies show that the best candidates are those who have a positive image of their faces and bodies and already feel good about themselves.

• Are your expectations in check?
Injectables, while offering exciting results, cannot change your life or make you look 20 years younger. They won’t, in most cases, completely eradicate lines. But they can help revert them to a less-advanced stage.

• Have you performed an at-home “stretch test?”
Perform this test to see if you could use dermal fillers to subtly smooth out lines: Look in the mirror and pull your skin tight on both sides of a troublesome wrinkle. If it goes away, injectables may be a good option for you.

• Do you have severe wrinkles?
If you consider your problem areas to be more than moderate, then fillers might not be the best treatment.

• Are you between 30 and 60 years old?
People in that age range tend to be the most successful candidates.

Of course, the best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate is to talk with an experienced cosmetic surgeon, who can help you assess your specific situation.

What Should You Eat After Weight Loss Surgery?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Many people want to lose some weight for one reason or another. For some, it may be as simple as losing a few extra pounds so they can fit into their holiday clothes more comfortably.

But for others the target is to lose several stone. And when this is their goal it can be difficult to do it successfully. Persevering on a diet isn’t easy, which is why some people – especially those who have a lot of weight to lose – opt for having weight loss surgery to help them reach that goal.

However, it is essential to realise that what you eat after you have had the surgery will be very different from what you may have eaten before. For example, if you consistently ate meals in large portions you won’t be able to any longer; simply because you won’t be able to take on board that amount of food.

To begin with, you will have to stick to liquids immediately after your operation. This will give your body time to adjust to the effects of the surgery. You will eventually be able to start eating ‘normal’ food again though – that is, food which is solid and resembles a normal meal.

However, that doesn’t mean it would be a case of ‘back to normal’. You will find that certain foods you used to eat before, don’t agree with you now. A classic example is that of high fat food; even if you loved eating chocolate bars before, you may find that you can now only do so in moderation.

Whatever type of weight loss surgery you have, it will effectively reduce the size of your stomach. This means that you will feel full much sooner than you would have done before – if you try and overeat then you will certainly feel very uncomfortable. As a result, it can be best to stick to eating smaller portions.

Clearly these changes to your diet will take some getting used to. But they will result in long term and beneficial weight loss, as you adjust to your new diet. Regardless of whether you have a gastric bypass performed, or a gastric band fitted, you can get positive results from either procedure.

Low fat, low calorie foods will also be processed much more easily if you chew them well before swallowing; and high fibre foods are also recommended. They have the effect of cleaning your system and keeping everything moving as it should do.

Whichever type of weight loss surgery you opt for, it is clear that it can have great effects – if you eat the right foods afterwards.

Living More Freely with LASIK

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Learn about how LASIK vision correction can free you of your dependency on vision correction devices such as glasses and contacts.

If you need glasses or contact lenses to get through your daily activities, you know the downside of that. Whether it’s glasses or lenses:

• They get lost at times
• They can be damaged or broken
• They need to be cared for and cleaned
• You have to have them updated periodically

There have been many advances in vision correction, so you can choose from many types of glasses or contact lenses, but that doesn’t change the fact that you still depend on them every day.

If your vision limitations are caused by a refractive error, you could consider the alternative of LASIK surgery. Refraction refers to the bending of light rays as they enter your eyes.

Refractory error
In a perfectly shaped cornea (the front surface of the eye) light rays bend at just the right angle to focus on your retina (the back inside surface where images are formed, as on a camera film). From the retina, the optic nerve picks up the image information and takes it to the brain, which interprets it, finds the right name for it, and tells you, “That’s a daffodil.”

Many of us have imperfectly shaped corneas. Maybe they’re too short, too long, too flat, too steep, or have tiny irregularities on them.

This causes the light rays to bend at the wrong angle.

• They might bend too sharply and focus in front of the retina. This creates nearsightedness (myopia)
• They might bend too little, and come to a focus behind the retina. This creates farsightedness (hyperopia)
• They might bend inconsistently because of small irregularities on the cornea, and focus inconsistently, creating blurry patches in your vision (astigmatism)

What LASIK does
LASIK vision correction surgery corrects the shape of your corneas, so that the light rays will bend at the correct angle and focus sharply on the retina. It’s a short, safe, and painless procedure and gives permanent vision improvement.

There’s something you can do to enhance your LASIK results:

• Choose a quality eye surgeon
• In turn, the surgeon will choose you if you’re a good candidate for LASIK. Good outcomes are not possible on poor candidates.

You might see advertisements for LASIK at “$399.99 per eye!” or some such amount. Those facilities may indeed offer a lower price, although you’ll probably incur extra expenses in the end (“hidden costs”). But they make up for the lower fees by cutting corners:
• Minimal pre-screening
• Cheaper equipment
• Older lasers
• Less staff
• Less surgeon time for you
• Little or no follow-up
• Pre-screening

There’s more to being a good candidate for LASIK surgery than having:
• Myopia
• Hyperopia, or
• Astigmatism

Some other conditions can disqualify you. If you’re:

• Diabetic
• Under 18
• Pregnant
• Are taking certain medications
• Have any of a variety of diseases

A quality eye surgeon will carefully select his LASIK patients and give them as much time as necessary to ensure the best possible results. If you qualify, your outcome will be astonishing. You’ll notice the difference immediately! You’ll wonder why you didn’t get around to freeing yourself up sooner from those glasses or contact lenses.

BOTOX Cosmetic

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Wrinkles are an unavoidable fact of life. As you age, various lifestyle and environmental factors will impact the appearance of your face. Like increased wisdom and experience, this is a natural part of aging. Unlike wisdom and experience, however, wrinkles can leave you feeling unattractive, less youthful, and self conscious.

Causes of Wrinkles

As you age, the outer layer of your skin (epidermis) begins to thin. This thinning results in moisture loss, causing dryer, rougher skin. The second layer of your skin (dermis) also thins. This layer contains the proteins, and elastin fibers that give your face its youthful spring and elasticity.

As surface area decreases, the ability for the dermis to supply the epidermis with sufficient nutrients to maintain its youthful appearance is significantly decreased, resulting in the appearance of fine lines. This process is sped up by sun exposure, smoking, and other lifestyle choices.

How BOTOX® can Help

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified form of the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, developed through years of research and study. It is injected into the muscles around wrinkles causing the tissue to relax, resulting in a smooth, wrinkle free appearance. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedure that has been proven incredibly effective in reducing the appearance of wrinkles in the forehead, around the mouth and eyes, and in between the eyebrows.

Side Effects

BOTOX® has no adverse effect on facial expressions. Your natural range of motion and emotional expression will not be impacted in any way with this procedure, and the positive results of youthful, wrinkle free skin are immediate. However, you should not have BOTOX® Cosmetic injected into an infected area of the skin, and certain prescription drugs are contraindicated for use with BOTOX® Cosmetic. You should discuss all medications you are on with your cosmetic surgeon prior to BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.

How Long Will the Results Last

The reduction in visible wrinkles and renewed youthful appearance of your skin will last up to six months. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are safe and non-surgical, so you can repeat the treatment as soon as you start to notice the reappearance of lines. An effective tool in restoring a youthful appearance, BOTOX® is a reliable, noninvasive tool in boosting self confidence and beauty.

Breast Augmentation

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Humans are the only species with permanently enlarged breasts. Evolutionists, social scientists, artists, and philosophers, have different takes on why this may be the case, but throughout the course of history, this fact has lifted the breast from an object of function, to one of beauty, desire, and status.

In our modern culture, breasts represent both femininity and sexual appeal. Some women are born with breasts that never developed into the size they desired. Others have experienced a loss of volume and shape due to weight loss, pregnancy, aging, and a number of other factors. No matter the reasons, breasts that are not ideally suited to your body can cause self esteem issues, social awkwardness, and even limit your clothing options. That’s why more and more women are looking to breast augmentation to correct these issues.

Breast augmentation is a safe cosmetic surgical procedure in which breasts are enlarged and reshaped to ideally suit your body. Saline or silicone implants are customized for a natural look, and placed into the breasts to enhance their appearance, boost self esteem and confidence. Your cosmetic surgeon will work closely with you to ensure that your breasts are proportioned and shaped in a manner that is most flattering to your body.

Procedure

Implants are placed in a pocket subglandularly, or underneath your breast tissue, or submuscularly, or below the chest muscles. An incision can be made around the nipple, underneath the breasts, or in the armpit, depending on the decision made between you and your cosmetic surgeon. All three incision points allow easy placement of the implants, and ultimately rely on your aesthetic desires. Once placed, the incision is closed, and the healing process can begin.

Recovery Process

After your surgery, the area around the incisions will be bandaged, and a special support bra will be provided to allow maximum support and comfort for the first few weeks after augmentation. You can expect some mild, easily manageable pain during the first week or so, but as with all surgical procedures, this is a temporary inconvenience. The scars will fade naturally within a few months, and depending on the incision point, may only be noticeable to you.

After the scars have faded, you will be able to face the world with renewed self esteem; going forward with natural-looking, perfectly proportioned breasts. Confidence in your appearance and sexual appeal, added volume, and perfectly shaped breasts that allow you to fit into that dress or bathing suit you’ve always wanted to wear are a simple procedure away.

Am I a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Are you hesitant to smile because you are embarrassed by the appearance of your teeth? Do you find that you frequently cover your mouth when you smile to hide your teeth? If you experience this self-consciousness about your smile, you are not alone. Many people never show the world their smile due to issues such as these.

Fortunately, you do not have to wait any longer to achieve the beautiful smile you deserve. With just a few visits to your cosmetic dentist, you will have a winning smile that you can show off with pride.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are an excellent option to achieve the dazzling smile you have always wanted. They are made out of thin, porcelain shells that get permanently bonded to your front teeth to help you achieve a straighter, brighter smile.

The ceramic material used in your porcelain veneers will be custom designed to accurately match the color, texture, and translucency of your natural teeth. By bonding your porcelain veneers to your teeth, your cosmetic dentist can help you straighten your teeth and prevent future damage.

Am I a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are an excellent option for people who would like to straighten the appearance of their teeth without the hassle and discomfort of braces. Ideal candidates for porcelain veneers have:

• Crooked or uneven teeth
• Chipped teeth
• Discolored teeth
• Small teeth that could be enlarged to enhance their appearance
• Small holes in their teeth
• Gaps between teeth
• Overcrowded teeth

In order to be a candidate for porcelain veneers, you must be in good oral health and have enough tooth enamel to successfully complete the treatment. If you do not have enough tooth enamel for porcelain veneers, then dental bonding or dental crowns may be a better option for you.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers will do much more than just improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. They can help improve the many other issues associated with your tooth problems. For example, many people with chipped teeth suffer from headaches. If your teeth are severely discolored, it may impact your social life. Individuals with uneven or gapped teeth experience greater difficulty cleaning their teeth and removing chunks of food from hard to reach places, which ultimately leads to greater tooth decay. By placing porcelain veneers on your teeth, you can eliminate many of these issues.

Dental Implants: Education is Key for Patients and Dentists

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a dentist places into your jaw to secure a replacement tooth or bridge. They are an ideal option for people with good oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to gum disease, injury, or some other reason. While somewhat high-tech, dental implants can be safer than traditional bridgework since they don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support. With a natural looking and feel, dental implants are teeth just like your own.

The Advantages of Dental Implants

Making the decision to have dental implants can genuinely be life altering for someone who has missing teeth. There are numerous advantages to having permanent a replacement for a lost tooth. Dental implants:

-Dental implants look, feel and function like your own teeth
-Dental implants give you back your smile and boost confidence
-Dental implants are designed to fuse with your jawbone so they become permanent
-Dental implants resist decay because they are not put over an existing tooth base
-Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your dentures/teeth may slip
-Dental implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures
-Dental implants are durable and can last many years
-Dental implants prevent jawbone deterioration as the implant stimulates the surrounding jawbone tissue

Even with all these advantages, it’s important to treat your dental implants with the same care as your regular teeth by brushing, flossing and going for regular check-ups.

Types of Implants

When you meet with your dentist to discuss your options for dental implants, he or she will likely suggest one of the three of the most common types of dental implants, based upon your specific needs:

Root Form Implant

Root form dental implants are the most common. They are most beneficial to patients who have a healthy jawbone. The implant is a much like screw shaped to mimic the root of a tooth. It is placed under the gums and directly into the jawbone.

Plate Form Implant

The plate form benefits patients whose jawbone may be deteriorated, too short or too narrow for the root form implant. The plate form is a longer, flat piece of titanium placed beneath the gums and on top of the jawbone.

Subperiosteal Implants

These implants are beneficial to patients who do not have enough jawbone to support a root dental implant or a plate dental implant. Subperiosteal implants are custom made and attached directly to your jawbone to strengthen the surface.

Typically, anyone healthy enough for a routine dental extraction or oral surgery may be considered for a dental implant procedure. The patient should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. If you are considering implants, talk to your dentist to see if they are right for you. If you are missing one or several teeth and would like to consider implant dentistry to replace them.
