Costa Rican hospitals earn an intern… accreditation

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Many Costa Rican hospitals and clinics have received certification that puts them on par with U.S. medical centers, a move that national competitiveness authorities know will boost this country’s profile as a prime destination for medical tourism.

Following a six-month review process, the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Facilities (AAAASF) has certified several private surgical and ambulatory centers, such as UNIBE hospital, And top JCI accredited hospitals, or soon to be accredited, include CIMA Hospital, Hospital Clinica Biblica, and La Catolica Hospital.

“The international accreditation of health services allows us to position ourselves among countries such as the United States, where patients are looking for certified qualified,” said Dr. Jorge Cortés, president of the Council for the International Promotion of Costa Rican Medicine (PROMED).

The vast majority of Costa Rica’s medical tourists come from the United States, whose population in many cases lacks affordable health care. Many procedures here are as little as one-third the cost, or less.

Nearly 13 percent of the medical tourists who visit Costa Rica seek cosmetic surgery procedures, while another 35 percent come for dental work, according to a study by the Competitiveness Ministry. In the U.S., insurance companies are beginning to catch on, offering to chip in for travel packages to this Central American country. For more information, go to www.arrivacostarica.com

What’s the age limit for Breast Surgery?

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

The decision to have breast implants is highly personal and should be based on your personal feelings about the surgery and the recommendations of your cosmetic surgeon rather than on arbitrary expectations.

There are, however, some general guidelines. The FDA suggests that you be at least 18 to have saline implants and 22 for silicone implants. These guidelines were put in place to ensure a woman’s breast development is complete, and that she is old enough to make an informed choice about breast implants. According to the FDA, the different age limits were chosen because the different types of implants carry different risks. If breast implants are needed for reconstruction, though, these limits do not apply.

What if I’m Younger?

In spite of FDA guidelines, women younger than 18 have pursued breast augmentation. Two big concerns about breast augmentation in younger women: their bodies may not be fully developed yet and they may be overly swayed by outside influences. Waiting until you’re a little older can give you a chance to grow into your body and find out exactly where your natural development will take you. With maturity also comes a greater ability to decide if breast implants are something you really want, or something you seem to be expected to have.

Cosmetic surgery should always be based on your own personal desires for your health and your body, not on any cultural or societal expectations, or to please another person. Giving yourself some time to grow and mature can give you a chance to feel more comfortable in your own self before deciding whether to undergo a permanent, surgical change.

What if I’m Older?

Breast augmentation surgery used to be thought of as something only younger women pursued, but over the last several years, the procedure has become more and more popular among older women. Over one-third of breast augmentation patients last year were women over forty. As you age, especially if you’ve had children, your breasts change shape and lose elasticity. Many women have opted for breast lifts or augmentations or both to restore the youthful appearance of their breasts.

Many surgeons suggest age fifty as a guideline for a maximum cut-off age for breast implants. After age fifty, as a general rule, there is a greater chance of complications or difficulty healing after major surgery. If you’re over fifty and in overall good health, though, and your doctor feels you’re a good candidate, there’s nothing to stop you from having breast implants.

What to expect from breast surgery

Friday, February 27th, 2009

As with any surgery, there are risks and complications and there is time needed for recovery. Depending on the type of surgery you have, your general health, and how well you heal, recovery following surgery can vary from days to weeks to months.

If you have been considering having breast augmentation, you have probably taken into account how much time you’d have to take off from work and from you daily errands and activities. With all of the advances in technique and technology with cosmetic surgery, recovery time has become shorter and shorter in recent years.

What to Expect Following Breast Surgery

Keep in mind that any general information presented here will be for the general population, and you must realize that all cases vary. Recovery needs are very different from patient to patient, but here we can offer what is typical based on patient reports.

Following breast augmentation surgery, women will find that their breasts are very firm. Patients should spend the first 48 hours after surgery resting completely, doing absolutely no activity. Within several days, however, the patient should feel able to return to work, depending, of course, on what type of work they do. The specific recovery time will depend on the physical requirements of their job.

Here are some suggestions to speed up recovery following breast augmentation:

• Keep ice on the area on the day of your surgery

• Don’t sleep on your stomach for the first two weeks

• Avoid activities that put pressure on the chest area

After a few days, your cosmetic surgeon will remove your gauze dressings. Sometimes a surgical bra is provided to help with recovery. In ten days, your stitches will be removed.

The scars that you have from the surgery are permanent. With advances in technique and technology, scarring is minimal with breast augmentation surgery.

Good reasons to enlarge your breasts:

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Breast augmentation, known as augmentation mammoplasty is becoming both more common and more safe in all health aspects. Surgical procedures to enhance the breast the size (breast enlargement), and/or shape (breast lift) of a woman’s breasts are considered “elective” cosmetic surgery.

However breast reductions and breast reconstruction are considered “corrective” plastic surgery. For these reasons some insurance plans may cover the corrective breast surgeries. There can be a number of motivations behind breast augmentation and some of the most common reasons are:

1. Enhancing and balancing body structure keeping the size of the breasts in consideration. Women with small breast size opt for breast enlargement.

2. General reduction in breast size is frequently observed after pregnancy and breast feeding. Breast lifts are commonly done to reshape “sagging” breast or implants can be used to restore breast size.

3. There can be a variation between the two breast sizes; breast augmentation procedures can be used to bring them to same size.

A comprehensive discussion with a surgeon is recommended before breast augmentation. Every surgery candidate should gain clarity about the process, and it’s realistic benefits along with understanding the side effects and risks. In surgical terms, a breast implant can be inserted behind or in front of the breast’s chest muscles to increase the size of the bust-line. Breast augmentation may impart added confidence and improve self-image, however many mistakenly believe that changes your appearance slightly will change your looks as well as your outlook and this is an unhealthy approach. It is necessary to be healthy and have a healthy self-image before seeking out breast augmentation.

There are two most common types of implants:

Silicon shell implant filled with silicone gel, and Silicone shell implant filled with salt-water (saline).

Saline-filled implants are done without any restrictions. For gel-filled implants, permission is necessary from FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

However common, breast augmentation is surgery so there are possibilities for unexpected outcomes as well as health risks. Capsular contracture is the most common problem that is experienced after breast augmentation. It generally happens when the scar tissue around the implant begins to tighten. It will make the breast feel harder and uncomfortable. Removal or replacement of the implant can solve this problem. Some swelling and pain may appear due to excessive bleeding during the surgery. There is always a threat of infection soon after a surgery. It takes time to heal and any exposure to infectious elements can cause trouble.

There can be adverse effects on nipples after a breast reduction, breast lift or breast implant surgery. They tend to get overly sensitive, hard and even go numb in some cases. A breast implant may break or leak under certain circumstances, and leakage of silicon implants in particular can lead to many complications effecting health and appearance. It can happen due to excessive pressure, defects or other reasons.

Young women or those planning a family should find relief in that breast augmentation does not cause any side-effects during or after pregnancy. Breast milk will be available for the child within a week. There are no instances of breast cancers amongst the women who underwent breast augmentation. It is necessary to detect complications at an early stage to prevent impacts, therefore regular post-surgery consults with your plastic surgeon is advised.

Breast augmentation is done at various hospitals and cosmetic surgery clinics and private practices. The cost of the largely surgery is effected by the type of facilities that are provided. The cost varies greatly with the skill and experience of the surgeon as well. Local anesthesia will be given to the patient in order to carry out the surgery. Complete healing will take a couple of weeks.

Recovery of breast augmentation and what to expect

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Breast augmentation is an operation that lasts one or two hours. It is made with silicone or saline implants that are placed beneath the breast tissue and if its possible, even underneath the muscle tissue of the chest.

This is a procedure done to ladies that either would like to enlarge their bra cup size, ladies that have uneven breasts, ladies that have had injuries and or breast surgery and would like to reconstruct the breast or just young women that would like a rejuvenation after pregnancy and nursing.

Your First Week After Breast Augmentation

Right after the surgery you will probably feel a bit tired and sore for a few days but you should be ok for walking after 24 to 48 hours. Your surgeon will give you pain medication that will be prescribed according to the amount of pain you are having. You will have to avoid strenuous activity and monitor for any post-surgical problems like extreme swelling or bleeding.

After a few days, your gauze dressings will be removed and your plastic surgeon may direct you to wear a surgical bra. At the end of your first week you could typically return to your job unless your occupation is physically demanding. Then your plastic surgeon would have to gauge your recovery and advise you on the appropriate time to resume working.

Your Second Week After Breast Augmentation

At about the 10 day point, your stitches will be removed. If you have been experiencing a burning sensation in your nipples, this can persist through the second week. Although your fuller breasts are in place, they will remain sore and you should limit physical contact with them as you continue to heal.

Your Next Six Weeks After Breast Augmentation

Under the supervision of your surgeon, you will begin to resume your regular physical activities in the ensuing weeks. Breast soreness typically lasts for three to four weeks before fading. Swelling should also diminish during this period, except for perhaps minor swelling. The scars from your surgery will be pink and for roughly six weeks. It will take months for the scars to soften and lighten. They will never be completely gone, but the scars often will diminish to barely noticeable.
