Many Costa Rican hospitals and clinics have received certification that puts them on par with U.S. medical centers, a move that national competitiveness authorities know will boost this country’s profile as a prime destination for medical tourism.
Following a six-month review process, the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Facilities (AAAASF) has certified several private surgical and ambulatory centers, such as UNIBE hospital, And top JCI accredited hospitals, or soon to be accredited, include CIMA Hospital, Hospital Clinica Biblica, and La Catolica Hospital.
“The international accreditation of health services allows us to position ourselves among countries such as the United States, where patients are looking for certified qualified,” said Dr. Jorge Cortés, president of the Council for the International Promotion of Costa Rican Medicine (PROMED).
The vast majority of Costa Rica’s medical tourists come from the United States, whose population in many cases lacks affordable health care. Many procedures here are as little as one-third the cost, or less.
Nearly 13 percent of the medical tourists who visit Costa Rica seek cosmetic surgery procedures, while another 35 percent come for dental work, according to a study by the Competitiveness Ministry. In the U.S., insurance companies are beginning to catch on, offering to chip in for travel packages to this Central American country. For more information, go to www.arrivacostarica.com

Joan Scott thought she was doing the right thing when she took her daughter Anita to a California dermatology clinic, to help clear up some skin problems. More than $10,000 later, she realized what a mistake she made. She could have had everything done for $600 in Costa Rica, and they have the very latest laser equipment and technology. Costa Rica is just two hours away from Miami and is the primary destination for laser procedures. The main web site is http://www.arrivacostarica.com/skin_specialists.htm

A family from Vienna, Virginia saved thousands of dollars when they went to Costa Rica for medical and dental care. Barbara and her daughter Angie had battled with obesity most of their lives. Both mother and daughter had developed symptoms like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and with Barbara, there was also the problem of knee pain because of her higher BMI.
Barbara says “ArrivaCostaRica.com” was the main source of information. We chose Costa Rica for weight loss surgery, because that looked the best to us. We saved about 60% on the cost of gastric bypass surgery in the US.
The Costa Rica hospital was excellent, clean and modern, and with all the up-to-date equipment you can imagine. The staff was very courteous, professional, and spoke English. If someone didn’t speak English, there would always be an interpreter around.
Eleven months later, Barbara and Angie are now enjoying the fruits of a successful bariatric surgery, with Barbara having lost 55 pounds and Angie 80. Their weight-related problems have improved drastically.
Angie’s dad accompanied them on their medical trip to Costa Rica. They stayed at the main surgery recovery inn, Las Cumbres Inn. While there, he decided to check out the dental clinic. Impressed by the level of cosmetic dentistry in Costa Rica, he got his dental bridges, dental crowns, and dental implants in Costa Rica at a huge discount. So, not did her dad save about 50% on the cost, but he also had them done in record time.
All in all, this family from Virginia is very satisfied with their cost-saving and high quality medical and dental trip to Costa Rica.

An evolution has occurred in health care. Overseas health care can lead to price breaks of more than $40,000 for procedures like knee replacement surgery or heart bypass surgery. Insurance companies and employers who provide their own insurance, have learned they can save between 50 percent and an incredible 90 percent on major medical claims, according to Gil Clark, president and CEO of ArrivaCostaRica.com, the primary portal for health savings in Costa Rica. Because of lower costs of medical supplies in Costa Rica, as well as a lower cost of living, prices are driven down compared to American providers.
When it comes to dental, high costs are very common. Dental coverage involves out-of-pocket expense, and the low prices and state-of-the-art dental offices in Costa Rica has proven very popular for patients and insurance companies alike.
Compared to the U.S., Margie Cardot, 49, learned of the huge savings in Costa Rica from her Blue Cross Blue Shield provider. With their encouragement, she wasted little time in getting on a plane for a short ride to San Jose for some of the best dental work of her life. The resulting dental work and cost savings was phenomenal and well worth the trip.
She had 6 crowns and a bridge replaced, along with a root canal and fillings. The dental work would have easily cost her $8,000 out of pocket back home, but she paid just $2,250 after insurance.
In another case, Morris Stewart of Shenendoah, Virginia. would have spent his entire $10,000 deductible allowed through his insurance policy if he had his leg surgery performed earlier this year near his home. For this reason alone, Stewart, 61, had planned to wait until age 65 and became qualified under Medicare before undertaking the surgery.
But, upon reading about medical tourism in the insurance company’s annual report, the retired businessman flew to Costa Rica and paid about $3,700, including all travel expenses. He even flew for free, using frequent flier miles.
Stewart was very pleased to discover that the quality of care and attentiveness of the doctors far surpassed anything he could have expected in the U.S.
“When you read the credentials and resumes of the doctors, you become convinced of their qualifications and wonderful care you will receive” he said.
Because of Costa Rica’s prominence in medical travel, it has become a major destination for medical and dental procedures of all kinds.
“People have come to understand that the top hospitals in Costa Rica are as good as any hospital in the U.S. or anywhere in the world” says Gil Clark, President and CEO of ArrivaCostaRica.com, the country’s main web site for doctors and low prices in Costa Rica.
Many insurance companies underwriting and providing group health insurance plans to employers, have started offering medical tourism as part of their health benefits package. Hundreds of employers throughout the country are now offering medical tourism packages, and patients are combining great vacations with their medical procedures.
The unknown can be a legitimate worry, say professionals who have worked overseas with major health care systems.
And, of course, the average patient has no real way of comparing hospitals on a worldwide basis. But, according to Clark, insurers are dedicated to inspecting and approving only the best hospitals, mostly JCI-accredited hospitals, before including them in their medical tourism packages.
Liability concerns are quickly being over come as employers continue to offer overseas health care options at an increasing rate to their plans.
Many employers, as wells, are learning that providing overseas medical options for high priced medical care in the U.S., is a welcome cost-savings approach for their companies.

Many women dream of having bigger, fuller breasts, believing that bigger is always better when it comes to this particular feminine attribute. However, millions of women also suffer from disproportionately large breasts, wishing only that they had a smaller chest. For many women, large and heavy breasts can cause pain and discomfort due to neck and back strain.
These women also often experience painful bra strap indentations on their shoulders due to the weight of their breasts, as well as bad posture. Breast reduction surgery might be the answer for these women.
During breast reduction surgery, fatty and glandular tissue, along with excess skin, is removed from the breasts. This results in the breasts becoming lighter; and because the breasts are also pulled tighter, they increase in firmness after the procedure. The patient’s posture usually improves following breast reduction surgery, and many women experience a boost in self confidence. Breast reduction surgery is usually performed under a general anaesthetic, but requires substantial healing time – anywhere from six weeks to six months.
Breast reduction surgery is usually only performed if a woman’s breasts are fully developed. However, it can be performed earlier if the size of a woman’s breasts are causing serious pain or physical discomfort. An ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery is someone who can understand the procedure and who has realistic expectations about the results. Moreover, the procedure is not recommended for women who intend to breast feed.
If you’re one of the millions of women who suffer from disproportionately large breasts, breast reduction surgery might be an ideal procedure for you. Most cosmetic surgery clinics offer a free consultation to determine whether breast reduction is right for you, with a surgeon discussing the goals and expectations of your surgery – so you can make an informed decision. You might even be shown before and after treatment photographs of patients with similar breasts, which can allow you to get a better idea of the outcome you should expect.
If you require breast reduction surgery due to pain and discomfort, yet feel cost is an issue keeping you from having the procedure done, it may be advisable to speak to a consultant at a cosmetic surgery clinic. Most clinics offer finance plans to help individuals obtain procedures like breast reduction surgery – so you don’t need to suffer through disproportionately large breasts. Seek advice and consultation and take control of your life with breast reduction surgery.

The decision to have breast implants is highly personal and should be based on your personal feelings about the surgery and the recommendations of your cosmetic surgeon rather than on arbitrary expectations.
There are, however, some general guidelines. The FDA suggests that you be at least 18 to have saline implants and 22 for silicone implants. These guidelines were put in place to ensure a woman’s breast development is complete, and that she is old enough to make an informed choice about breast implants. According to the FDA, the different age limits were chosen because the different types of implants carry different risks. If breast implants are needed for reconstruction, though, these limits do not apply.
What if I’m Younger?
In spite of FDA guidelines, women younger than 18 have pursued breast augmentation. Two big concerns about breast augmentation in younger women: their bodies may not be fully developed yet and they may be overly swayed by outside influences. Waiting until you’re a little older can give you a chance to grow into your body and find out exactly where your natural development will take you. With maturity also comes a greater ability to decide if breast implants are something you really want, or something you seem to be expected to have.
Cosmetic surgery should always be based on your own personal desires for your health and your body, not on any cultural or societal expectations, or to please another person. Giving yourself some time to grow and mature can give you a chance to feel more comfortable in your own self before deciding whether to undergo a permanent, surgical change.
What if I’m Older?
Breast augmentation surgery used to be thought of as something only younger women pursued, but over the last several years, the procedure has become more and more popular among older women. Over one-third of breast augmentation patients last year were women over forty. As you age, especially if you’ve had children, your breasts change shape and lose elasticity. Many women have opted for breast lifts or augmentations or both to restore the youthful appearance of their breasts.
Many surgeons suggest age fifty as a guideline for a maximum cut-off age for breast implants. After age fifty, as a general rule, there is a greater chance of complications or difficulty healing after major surgery. If you’re over fifty and in overall good health, though, and your doctor feels you’re a good candidate, there’s nothing to stop you from having breast implants.

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the country today. Each year, thousands of women are turning to their cosmetic surgeon to provide them with fuller, larger, more attractive breasts.
But how effective are the results of this procedure?
While many women are very satisfied with the results and feel more attractive as a result of their breast augmentation, there are also countless others who are disappointed by the less natural appearance of their new breasts.
Vaser® Hi Def Breast Procedure
Fortunately, there is a new advancement in cosmetic surgery technology that provides women with breast implants that look and feel much more natural than ever before. The Vaser® Hi Definition Breast Procedure combines the principles of breast augmentation surgery and liposuction to provide women with results that leave them feeling more attractive and more satisfied.
Vaser Hi Def Breast was developed as an off-shoot to Vaser® Hi Def Liposculpture, which uses ultrasonic technology to remove fat around muscular regions to provide a more toned and athletic appearance. Both procedures utilize the same selective fat removing principles in accomplishing their goals.
Vaser Hi Def Breast allows your cosmetic surgeon to selectively remove sections of fat around the implant to give your new breasts a more youthful and natural appearance. Vaser technology causes the skin to contract, which keeps the breast tissue tighter and firmer.
Am I a Candidate?
Vaser Hi Def Breast is not for everyone. It is important to discuss your medical history and goals for your surgery with your doctor to make sure that this procedure is right for you.

Often, women with overly large, pendulous breasts may experience actual physical suffering from their breasts’ weight. Unrelenting neck and back pain, deep grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, rapidly degenerating bone structure and the incapacity to enjoy some physical activities are primary reasons women seek out breast reduction surgery; they may also be socially uneasy because of culture’s emphasis on breast size and the unwanted harassment they may receive simply because their breast are large. As techniques to reduce large breasts improve, more women have chosen this option.
Eliminating Discomfort Associated with Large Breasts
Large, heavy breasts can place an incredibly unhealthy burden on a woman’s form. When a women’s breast are highly disproportionate to her skeletal structure, the added weight can actually create deformities in her skeleton. The constant weight of breasts pulling on bra straps can actually bring about chronic skin irritations. Added to all of these disorders, the weight of large breasts can initiate breathing problems and more serious health concerns.
By decreasing the weight of a woman’s breasts and aligning them more to her skeletal structure, breast reduction surgery gives women the chance to regain their proper posture, freeing them from years of neck and back pain, stiffness and soreness.
Enhanced Self-Confidence
While pain relief is a key reason many women want their breasts reduced in size, often women are also highly uncomfortable with the attention their large breast size constantly brings their way. This unwanted interest causes many women to slouch and become more and more unhappy with their personal appearance.
Women feel they are being rated and judged by the size of their breasts; their self-confidence can gradually erode to nothing. Believing they are being pigeon-holed because of the size of her breast, they begin to doubt their actual abilities.
By diminishing the breast size, breast reduction surgery can assist a women in reclaiming the confidence that she can do whatever she wishes.
Breast Reduction Surgery Risks
Like any surgery, breast reduction surgery carries some risks, such as infection, bleeding, and an adverse response to the anesthesia. Other unlikely, but possible risks could include:
• Loss of feeling in the nipples
• Reduced blood supply to the nipples, causing nipple loss and scarring
• Lack of ability to breast-feed
• Asymmetric size, position and contour of the breasts or nipples
