How do you know if you are ready for a facelift? How old do you have to be? What makes some a good candidate for the surgery? These are questions that many people ask when considering a rhytidectomy, otherwise known as a face lift. Unfortunately, the answers are unclear. Each case is unique and the individual must be physically ready for the procedure as well as mentally prepared.
In a nut shell, it is a procedure in which the face is rejuvenated through tightening and firming up the skin on the lower two-thirds of the face. A plastic surgeon is able to do this by making an incision that starts in the hairline near the temple and continues in front of the ear and then loops around the back of the ear and meets back up to the hair line.
This incision allows the surgeon to pull the skin tight on the face, remove any excess, and suture it in place. This method is often combined with the use of face fillers or fat transfer to recreate the youthful fullness in the cheeks. A facelift or necklift can also be combined with liposuction to remove fat deposits that give so many people the “turkey neck” look.
A patient is aesthetically ready for a procedure when their skin has begun to sag and jowls begin to form along the jaw. A facelift will also correct drooped chin creating a turkey neck or deep folds extending from your nostrils to your mouth. A patient must be psychologically ready for the method as well and have realistic expectations of the outcome.
What is the ideal age for a facelift?
That is a personal decision but usually the younger patients are around 40 and the oldest patients between 70 and 80. Younger patients may only need a mini-facelift, which means smaller incisions and quicker recovery time.
The results of this will usually last longer on a younger patient because of the greater elasticity in their skin. The procedure can be performed on much older patients as well, however as the skin loses elasticity and folds deepen, it is difficult to achieve pleasing results.
To be a good candidate and achieve natural results patients must be in good health, have enough elasticity in their skin, be mentally stable and prepared for the change in their appearance and life, and have realistic expectations. If you are considering the procedure, you must consult with your plastic surgeon to determine if you and your face are ready for it.

Happy with your health insurance? Its probably because you’re healthy and don’t really need it. But when you do get sick, you may discover your insurance doesn’t cover as much as what you thought.
Just when you have the least physical and emotional ability to cope, you find yourself dealing with a financial and bureaucratic nightmare of claims that are refused, and procedures and medications that are denied by an anonymous insurance administrator telling their doctor what they can and cannot prescribe.
Saying the U.S. has the best health care in the world doesn’t make it so.
The World Health Organization ranks the U.S. health-care system 37th, between Costa Rica and Slovenia, behind three South American countries and well behind the much-maligned UK and Canadian systems.
While it’s true we have some of the best technology, research and training for doctors and nurses, if Americans can’t access them, it doesn’t make much difference how great it is. French cuisine is arguably the best in the world, but try telling that to the starving 18th century French peasants who because of their hunger and other sufferings, started the French revolution.
While false fears run rampant about “pulling the plug on Grandma” and government funds for abortion, there seems to be little regard for people between the age of 0 and 65 who are dying, suffering or going bankrupt because they just can’t afford the health care they need.
In this, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, every child, every person, should have access to health care. No parent should have to wait until their child gets so sick that the emergency room is the only option. No one should have to divorce an ailing spouse in order to avoid bankruptcy or poverty. No one should die because they can’t afford to be treated. Access to affordable health care, like freedom and democracy, is a moral issue.
Many insurers and employers, meanwhile, are discovering Costa Rica for exceptional medical and dental care. For more information, please go to www.arrivacostarica.com

Joan Scott thought she was doing the right thing when she took her daughter Anita to a California dermatology clinic, to help clear up some skin problems. More than $10,000 later, she realized what a mistake she made. She could have had everything done for $600 in Costa Rica, and they have the very latest laser equipment and technology. Facial rejuvenation procedures
There are many facial rejuvenation procedures available for those seeking cosmetic surgery to improve the shape or youthfulness of the face.
Facelift: This surgical procedure tightens the skin and underlying muscles of your face and neck, resulting in a younger, rejuvenated appearance.
Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty: Eyelid surgery improves the overall appearance of your eyes. It can remove the excess skin that obscures the natural fold of your upper eyelids, and reduce the puffiness in your upper eyelids that makes your eyes appear tired.
Browlift Surgery: Also called a forehead or eyebrow lift, this procedure allows you to achieve a younger, fresher look by reducing the appearance of lines in your forehead and elevating the position of your eyebrow line.
Nose Surgery: A “nose job,” or rhinoplasty can help balance your facial features by decreasing or increasing the size of your nose. This procedure can also change the tip or bridge of your nose, as well as narrow or alter the shape of your nostrils.
Chin and Cheek Implants: Facial implants may be used to give your facial contours a more defined shape. Chin and cheek implants can better balance your facial characteristics, and create a harmony between the other features of your face.
Facial and Neck Liposuction: Facial liposuction is used to suction out unwanted fat in your face, which can create the appearance of a double chin or excessive puffiness in your neck.
Otoplasty / Ear Surgery: This surgical procedure is performed to move prominent ears closer to your head, or to recreate the natural folds in your ear.
Laser Skin Resurfacing: Laser skin resurfacing utilizes laser technology to soften and minimize wrinkles, acne scars, skin spots, and other lines and blemishes to give you consistent and glowing skin.
Body contouring procedures
Liposuction: This procedure works to slim and reshape specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and enhancing your self confidence. Stubborn fatty deposits can be removed in areas such as your arms, abdomen, neck, hips, buttocks, thighs, calves and knees.
Tummy Tuck: Also called an abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery removes excessive fat and skin from your abdomen, and then tightens the muscles of your abdominal wall. You will talk away with a slimmer, tighter abdominal section.
Buttocks Augmentation: Through micro fat grafting, your plastic surgeon can take excess fat from one area of your body, and use it to add fullness to your buttocks to create nearly any shape or look you desire.
Arm Contouring: By removing excessive or loose skin, and using liposuction to get rid of any excessive fat, your arms can be beautifully reshaped and sculped for a sleek, sexy look.
Gynecomastia: Also called a “male breast reduction,” this procedure removes excess fat and tissue in the breast area of men. Liposuction can be used to remove the fatty tissue, and a scalpel will be used to remove any glandular tissue that needs to be taken out.
Breast augmentation procedures
Breast Enlargement: A breast enlargement procedure uses implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts. Also, if you were injured or were forced to have a mastectomy because of cancer or other misfortune, a breast enlargement can restore your confidence by reconstructing your breasts.
Breast Lift: A breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure that raises and re-contours sagging breasts, or breasts that have lost their elasticity and volume. This may be caused by childbearing, aging or weight loss.
Breast Reduction: Breast reduction surgery, or a “reduction mammaplasty,” reduces the size of your breasts by removing some of the fat, tissue, and skin that comprise your breasts. This surgery is ideal for patinets who experience physical pain due to the size of their breasts.

An evolution has occurred in health care. Overseas health care can lead to price breaks of more than $40,000 for procedures like knee replacement surgery or heart bypass surgery. Insurance companies and employers who provide their own insurance, have learned they can save between 50 percent and an incredible 90 percent on major medical claims, according to Gil Clark, president and CEO of ArrivaCostaRica.com, the primary portal for health savings in Costa Rica. Because of lower costs of medical supplies in Costa Rica, as well as a lower cost of living, prices are driven down compared to American providers.
When it comes to dental, high costs are very common. Dental coverage involves out-of-pocket expense, and the low prices and state-of-the-art dental offices in Costa Rica has proven very popular for patients and insurance companies alike.
Compared to the U.S., Margie Cardot, 49, learned of the huge savings in Costa Rica from her Blue Cross Blue Shield provider. With their encouragement, she wasted little time in getting on a plane for a short ride to San Jose for some of the best dental work of her life. The resulting dental work and cost savings was phenomenal and well worth the trip.
She had 6 crowns and a bridge replaced, along with a root canal and fillings. The dental work would have easily cost her $8,000 out of pocket back home, but she paid just $2,250 after insurance.
In another case, Morris Stewart of Shenendoah, Virginia. would have spent his entire $10,000 deductible allowed through his insurance policy if he had his leg surgery performed earlier this year near his home. For this reason alone, Stewart, 61, had planned to wait until age 65 and became qualified under Medicare before undertaking the surgery.
But, upon reading about medical tourism in the insurance company’s annual report, the retired businessman flew to Costa Rica and paid about $3,700, including all travel expenses. He even flew for free, using frequent flier miles.
Stewart was very pleased to discover that the quality of care and attentiveness of the doctors far surpassed anything he could have expected in the U.S.
“When you read the credentials and resumes of the doctors, you become convinced of their qualifications and wonderful care you will receive” he said.
Because of Costa Rica’s prominence in medical travel, it has become a major destination for medical and dental procedures of all kinds.
“People have come to understand that the top hospitals in Costa Rica are as good as any hospital in the U.S. or anywhere in the world” says Gil Clark, President and CEO of ArrivaCostaRica.com, the country’s main web site for doctors and low prices in Costa Rica.
Many insurance companies underwriting and providing group health insurance plans to employers, have started offering medical tourism as part of their health benefits package. Hundreds of employers throughout the country are now offering medical tourism packages, and patients are combining great vacations with their medical procedures.
The unknown can be a legitimate worry, say professionals who have worked overseas with major health care systems.
And, of course, the average patient has no real way of comparing hospitals on a worldwide basis. But, according to Clark, insurers are dedicated to inspecting and approving only the best hospitals, mostly JCI-accredited hospitals, before including them in their medical tourism packages.
Liability concerns are quickly being over come as employers continue to offer overseas health care options at an increasing rate to their plans.
Many employers, as wells, are learning that providing overseas medical options for high priced medical care in the U.S., is a welcome cost-savings approach for their companies.

Between the Lines
Many men and women who look for a cosmetic surgeon aren’t looking for an extreme makeover, or even a full facelift. One of the most common complaints of patients seeking cosmetic treatments are those little lines that start appearing in your 30’s and become more common in your 40’s, eventually turning from “lines” into “wrinkles.” Most patients find that dermal fillers will serve just as well as extensive surgery, without the higher cost or recovery time.
But the question most people want answered before approaching a cosmetic surgeon about dermal fillers is, are they safe?
Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Botox have become well-known throughout the US. The question of how safe dermal fillers are can be a difficult question to answer, partially because with any cosmetic surgery or treatment people may react differently to the chemicals and procedure.
Approved for Human Use
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is the organization which determines which dermal fillers are approved for human use, like Restylane. In comparison to other countries, the US has a very small number of approved dermal fillers. This is largely due to the fact that injectable treatments have to undergo extensive testing before they can be approved for human use by the FDA.
Although dermal fillers which are approved by the FDA and not made from animal byproducts are considered safe, it is still possible that you might have a negative reaction to a procedure. If this happens, you should contact your cosmetic surgeon immediately. Negative reactions most commonly happen when the filler was not injected correctly, so one of the best ways to insure the correct usage is by working with an experienced cosmetic surgeon who is familiar with dermal fillers and their proper use. However, most patients never have a negative reaction when treated with Restylane, or other approved dermal fillers.
Steps to Take
The following steps can help you make sure that your procedure will go smoothly:
• Ask your cosmetic surgeon which filler he or she recommends
• Follow your doctor’s instructions before and after your procedure
• Contact your cosmetic surgeon immediately if you have a negative reaction
Your best resource for finding out more about dermal fillers, like Restylane, is your cosmetic surgeon. When you make an appointment, be sure to take a list of any questions you might have

Cosmetic surgery leaves no scars.
Many men and women considering cosmetic surgery often have the misconception that there will be absolutely no scarring after their cosmetic surgery. While cosmetic surgeons work as hard as possible to place incisions in unnoticeable locations, when an incision is made or when skin is removed, it is inevitable that a scar will develop. By choosing an experienced, specially trained cosmetic surgeon, patients can make sure that incisions are made as small as possible and concealed by the natural curves of their bodies.
Cosmetic surgery is dangerous.
Cosmetic surgery is a medical procedure and as with all surgeries, there are risks associated for every patient. Recovery times vary, but dangerous is not an accurate word to describe some of the fascinating procedures cosmetic surgeons perform on men and women of all ages every day. Patients should choose a board certified surgeon with adequate experience and training in the type of cosmetic surgery you are considering.
Shopping for the lowest price on a procedure is the best way to find a cosmetic surgeon.
Cosmetic surgery yields permanent physical results and is serious business. Searching for the lowest price cosmetic surgeon in your area is not the best way to choose a cosmetic surgeon. Patients considering cosmetic surgery should find a cosmetic surgeon who is honest with them about the cost, risk, and results of their procedure. Cost must be considered, but it is more important to have a safe procedure performed by a gifted surgery that produces magnificent results.
All cosmetic surgeons are the same.
While cosmetic surgeons may share similar backgrounds, their skill level, experience, and training varies widely. During your initial consultation you should ask your potential cosmetic surgeon about his background and why he’s the best choice for your particular aesthetic goals.
Cosmetic surgeons only perform breast surgery.
While some cosmetic surgeons concentrate on just one or two specific procedures, many cosmetic surgeons provide patients with a wide array of cosmetic surgery options such as:
• Abdominoplasty
• BOTOX®
• Arm reduction
• Liposuction
• Facelift
• Rhinoplasty
Recovery from cosmetic surgery is very painful.
Most cosmetic surgery patients find that the recovery period from cosmetic surgery is not nearly as painful as they thought. People who are considering cosmetic surgery, but are wary of the pain associated with the recovery, should schedule an initial consultation with a cosmetic surgeon in their area. During an initial consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will inform you of exactly what you can expect before, during and after cosmetic surgery.

Imagine spending less than 30 minutes in a doctor’s office and coming out with an immediate improvement of deep wrinkles, fine lines and even scars. Thanks to the injection of a dermal filler, that can easily be a reality today.
Sometimes dubbed a “liquid facelift,” dermal fillers are soaring in popularity for men and women. They are a quick, affordable and non-invasive way to improve the look and feel of your skin, with little risk. In fact, aside from Botox, dermal fillers are the most popular non-surgical way to give your face a natural-looking boost.
How a Dermal Filler Can Help
• Smoothing the nasolabial folds that extend from the outside corners of the nose to the sides of the mouth
• Filling in “marionette” lines that tend to settle in from the corners of the mouth down to the chin
• Reducing the appearance of fine, vertical lines that appear around the lips, top and bottom
• Improving the look of chin wrinkles
• Diminishing acne scars and other types of scars on the face
• Increasing lip fullness
• Shaping facial contours and restoring fullness to cheeks and the under-eye area
Dermal Fillers Defined
Dermal fillers are gels made from either synthetic products or naturally-occurring substances such as collagen and hyaluronic acid. They are injected under the top layer of skin into the middle layer (the dermis) to add volume and firmness.
There are many different kinds of fillers, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Depending on the type used, skin tests are sometimes performed before treatment to check for allergic sensitivity.
It’s important to talk with your doctor about your options and to make sure you understand why one dermal filler might be better in your case than another. Restylane and Radiesse are two of the most popular fillers. Botox is very well-known and is a way of smoothing the facial skin, but is not a dermal filler. It works a different way.
A Win-Win Solution
Dermal fillers offer exciting results that can last up to twelve months or so. Other benefits include:
• No down time because you can see a difference right away
• No waiting as treatments typically take less than 30 minutes.
• No anesthesia
• No safety worries as FDA-approved dermal fillers are safe and effective and possible side effects are minimal
